Inclusive design
Inclusive design places people at the heart of the design process of our spaces and places
Inclusive design aims to deliver spaces and places for everyone. It means that our customers and colleagues working in our stations; benefit from the full range of services and a positive travel for all that we offer.
Inclusive design:
- puts people at the heart of the design process, ensuring they can use the railway safely, easily and with dignity
- acknowledges diversity and difference, and is responsive to people’s needs
- offers choice where a single design solution may not work for everyone
- provides for flexibility in use, offering more than one solution to help balance everyone’s needs; and
- provides buildings and environments that are convenient and enjoyable for everyone.
We work with our Built Environment Accessibility Panel and Technical Authority teams to make sure our designs follow these principles and carry out Diversity Impact Assessments to ensure our spaces are an inclusive travel experience for everyone.

Diversity Impact Assessments (DIAs)
Our Diversity Impact Assessments are one way we’re delivering on our Everyone Belongs Strategy and fulfilling the Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED), which is part of the Equality Act 2010.
DIAs enable us to measure the impact of projects, programmes and policies, so we can create the most accessible spaces for everyone.
DIAs consider effects on people with characteristics protected under the Equality Act, including age, disability, sex and gender reassignment, and how we can remove barriers and promote equality both in our stations and workplaces..
This helps ensure that we deliver a better railway for our customers , an accessible workplace for our colleagues, and that we comply with the Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED).
For more information or to check if a DIA has been completed on a project, contact DiversityImpactAssessment@networkrail.co.uk or FOI@networkrail.co.uk.
Network Rail have created an online, easy to use template called DIA Digital which captures our DIAs through a digital platform. We have better visibility of NR’s compliance with the Equality Act 2010 and our PSED.
