We’re partnering with waste management specialists The Green Block to transform the way we manage waste at our stations in the Southern region.

Recycling at our managed stations

Our new partnership with The Green Block is a joint effort to transform waste management across three managed stations in the Southern region. The Green Block helps businesses overcome the challenges of effective waste management.

We produce thousands of tonnes of waste each year, which without proper management, could end up in landfills. That’s why we’re introducing advanced waste management technology from The Green Block at London Victoria, London Waterloo and London Bridge stations to prevent this.

The new initiative aims to increase our recycling rates to 95%, eliminate landfill waste and lower carbon emissions across these stations. We also hope it will create new job opportunities.

An innovative solution

To achieve these ambitious goals, The Green Block has introduced patented and innovative mobile segregation units at our stations. The first-of-their-kind units can segregate, wash, compact, bale, weigh and electronically tag all waste placed into them. This includes materials like paper, plastic, glass, cardboard, aluminium, and even food waste – ensuring they’re recycled as efficiently as possible.

We’re combining the expertise of dedicated teams with this advanced technology to make sure every item in our stations is tracked, sorted and re-used where possible.

The proprietary Plaza system – a sophisticated tracking system – uses real time data allowing us to know exactly what waste has been generated, where it originated, and its final destination. With real-time data analytics, we can optimise collection schedules, monitor waste streams more effectively, and reinvest rebates from the resale of waste back into the business.

A cleaner and greener railway

This new initiative forms part of our broader commitment to sustainability and improving recycling across our organisation.

It’s a significant step in achieving the aims laid out in our environmental sustainability strategy. The strategy lays out our vision to conserve more energy and natural resources, and significantly reduce carbon emissions. All for a more sustainable and greener railway for you.
