Island Line Improvements

We’re improving the reliability of services on the Island line and also preserving the Isle of Wight’s historic Ryde Pier

Project timeline

This first part of this project, covering the Island Line, is due to start on Friday 6 September and will be completed by Sunday 6 October 2024.  The second part of the project, Ryde Pier maintenance, starts on Monday 7 October and finishes in early May 2025.

What work is taking place?

Major engineering works will take place on the Island Line and Ryde Pier. The programme includes track and bridge renewals between Ryde St Johns Road and Ryde Pier Head, renovations to a historic footbridge at Brading, signalling works at Ryde and bridge repairs in Sandown.

When is the work taking place?

Our engineers will be working across the Island Line between Friday 6 September and Sunday 6 October 2024. With works on Ryde Pier continuing until May 2025.

How will this work affect me?

During our works South Western Railway (SWR) trains will be replaced by rail replacement services in the following ways:

Friday 6 September to Sunday 6 October 2024

Buses will replace all trains between Ryde Pier Head and Shanklin.

Monday 7 October to Early May 2025

A minibus shuttle service will be in operation between Ryde Pier Head and Ryde Esplanade with train services in operation every 30 minutes between Ryde Esplanade and Shanklin.

Why is the work needed?

We are doing this work because parts of the track and infrastructure on the Island Line have become life-expired and extreme weather is contributing to the acceleration of the degradation of the railway. Our planned maintenance will ensure we’re able to keep running services safely and reliably.

Our ongoing programme of upgrades to the steel structure and track between Ryde Pier Head and Ryde Esplanade stations will preserve and strengthen the track and infrastructure for another 60 years, allowing future generations to enjoy the historic landmark.
