Hague Bar emergency embankment work

We’re carrying out an urgent repair to the embankment in the Hague Bar area of New Mills, High Peak.

Project timeline

Engineers will be on site from May until the autumn.

What work is taking place?

Following emergency ground investigations, engineers confirmed that work is required to repair damage to the earth that supports the railway.

Engineers are working 24/7 to stabilise the embankment in the Hague Bar area of New Mills until autumn. If the work is not carried out, there is a risk of 50,000 tonnes of earth falling from the railway into the River Goyt.

The team are drilling 160-metre-long pile foundations into the earth to create an underground retaining wall between the railway and the river to stop the movement of the ground.

Once this is complete, the team will need to rebuild the railway on top of the stabilised earth to allow trains to safely operate.

This will be carried out as quickly and efficiently as possible to minimise disruption to the community and to reopen the railway fully as soon as possible.

When is the work taking place?

The emergency work started in May and will continue until Autumn. The team are working around the clock to complete the work as soon as possible.

How will this work affect me?

People living in New Mills will notice an increased presence of railway workers in the area. There is a compound in Hague Bar where teams access the track.

If you live near the railway, you might hear us as we will be working 24 hours a day. We will send residents notification before any major expected disruption.

Changes to train services

The work means there will be some changes in services between Saturday 6 July and Monday 26 August.

For Manchester to New Mills Central via Bredbury:

  • From Monday to Saturday there will be an hourly train service between Manchester Piccadilly and Marple. A bus service will run between Marple and Chinley.
  • On Sundays, an hourly bus service will run between Manchester Piccadilly, Bredbury, Marple and Chinley.

Services between Chinley and Manchester Piccadilly continue to divert via Hazel Grove and Stockport, with a bus service between Chinley and Marple.

Passengers are advised to check www.nationalrail.co.uk before they travel.

Why is the work needed?

If the work is not carried out, there is a risk of 50,000 tonnes of earth falling from the railway into the River Goyt. This work is an emergency and needs to be carried out straight away to avoid further damage to the railway.
