Lewisham resignalling

We’re replacing the signalling on the south east London lines running through Lewisham, from New Cross to Blackheath and Hither Green.

The old 1970s signalling equipment will be replaced with the modern and more reliable signalling technology.

Project timeline

The new signalling system will be installed alongside the existing system from Christmas 2024 over the next two years and will be brought into use over Christmas 2026.

What work is taking place?

The project involves:

  • Replacement of all signalling equipment on the south east London lines running through Lewisham, from New Cross to Blackheath and Hither Green
  • Installing Automatic Route Setting (ARS) at Three Bridges Rail Operating Centre to improve route management efficiency in this area.
  • Improved signalling layout and modified signal positions.

How will this work affect me?

The new signalling system will be installed alongside the existing system over the next two years and will be brought into use over an extended closure of the railway over Christmas 2026, currently 4-days starting on 24/12/26.

Preparation work over the next two years will take place overnight, at weekends and over bank holidays.

Train services on the Hayes line and in the Lewisham area more generally will be impacted.

People are advised to plan ahead and check their journeys with Southeastern before travelling.

Why is the work needed?

Project benefits

  • The new, modern equipment will mean fewer faults and fewer delays for passengers in south east London and out to Kent
  • The new equipment installed will be easier to maintain, fix and find faults when something does go wrong.
  • Modified signalling layout will improve line speeds.
  • Upgraded Automatic Route Setting will make route setting and train control more efficient.

The project in numbers

£90 million investment in signalling,
track, civils, power systems
and telecoms

X4 new signals

10 new suites of equipment cases which will connect to the lineside signalling equipment.

2 new Relocatable Equipment Buildings (REB) which will connect to the lineside signalling equipment

More than 200 km of new signalling, telecoms and power supply cable will be installed

Lineside neighbours

We will be accessing the railway during the works with materials and track machinery from either our access point at St Johns station, off St Johns Vale near Cliff Terrace, or via our access point at Grove Park Train Depot, off Gables Close.

The work will involve installing piles for the foundations for the signalling cabinets using a piling rig.

Due to the nature of the piling work, there be some noise disturbance and vibrations. However, we will minimise as much disruption to residents as possible by using vibration piling where possible, but some hammer piling may be necessary on some occasions due to the ground conditions.

Resignalling South London

We are also delivering a major package of upgrades to modernise 1980s track and signalling on the South London lines into London Victoria. Current upgrades between Herne Hill, Nunhead and the Battersea are underway and will continue until 2026.
