We’re working hard this Christmas and New Year period to improve London Liverpool Street station. Our work will result in better and more reliable journeys for you in and out of the station.

Better journeys in and out of London Liverpool Street

London Liverpool Street station will be closed for eight days from Christmas Day 25 December 2024 to New Year’s Day Wednesday 1 January 2025. This is so our teams can safely and efficiently carry out work in and around the station.

We’ll carry out work to strengthen the Bishopsgate tunnel which runs out of the station. Engineers will install steel support girders inside and repair the existing steelwork. This will help prevent corrosion and keep your trains running reliably in and out of the station.

A better station

We’ll also be making use of the closure to carry out vital upgrades inside Britain’s busiest station.

Engineers will also be busy preparing the station for our roof renewal programme. This involves building the scaffolding on Exchange Square at the north end of the train shed.

The scaffolding will support our teams as they renew over 600 panels above platforms one to 10.

Renewing the roof will help allow more light in – giving you a brighter station. We’ll also improve the drainage system here and renew the roof seals to make the roof more resilient against increasingly frequent storms.

Our teams will also continue installing 21 automatic new ticket gates inside for platforms one to 10.

This will help ease congestion, keeping you moving swiftly and safely on your journeys. The 21 new gates also include four wide access gates to help improve accessibility.

Check before you travel

There will be no services running at London Liverpool Street station from Christmas Day 25 December 2024 to New Year’s Day Wednesday 1 January 2025 while the station is closed.

The station concourse and in-station retail shops will also be closed during this period.

Services will restart on Thursday 2 January.

During the period of closure, Greater Anglia services, including Stansted Express, will terminate at Tottenham Hale. London Overground services will terminate at London Fields.

Please use Victoria line services from Walthamstow Central and Seven Sisters or local bus services to complete your journeys during this closure.

Lawrence Bowman, the route director for the Anglia region at Network Rail, said: “It is important to allow our skilled engineers the time to be able to work safely on the track while trains are not running, and so I want to thank everyone for their patience while we deliver this important work to improve the railway.”
