We’re supporting Second Hand September – an initiative putting pre-loved clothing in the spotlight.

Second Hand September is a pledge started by Oxfam. The charity wants us all to rethink the month that’s usually associated with Fashion Week and encourages you to shop second-hand. Buying second-hand clothing is kinder to the planet and often to your wallet.

Several other organisations have joined the initiative since then, including us.

Shopping second hand inside our stations

We started offering pre-loved fashion inside Britain’s biggest railway stations in September 2023.

We signed pre-loved fashion retailer Good London for pop-up spaces at London Victoria and London Bridge that month. And it was a big hit.

The brand has sold over 9,000 items across both stores since opening. That’s about three tonnes of clothing that may have otherwise ended up in landfill.

We also have pop-ups with charity Shelter next month – giving you even more opportunities to shop second hand with us. You can find them at London Victoria from the 1 to 3 October and at London Bridge from 22 to 24 October.

We hope you’ll enjoy shopping for pre-loved clothing with us.

Hamish Kiernan, commercial director of Property at Network Rail, said: “Our pop-ups with Good London and Shelter offer customers great quality and value. We are helping to divert clothing from landfill and giving visibility of a pre-loved offer to millions of passengers.

“We sought out Good London as a brand that could really add a point of difference to our retail mix and our customers have loved the addition.”

A better travel experience

We’re passionate about giving you a great journey wherever possible. Initiatives like Second Hand September are just one of the ways we do this.

That’s why you can find a broad selection of retail and food and drink options the 20 stations we manage. And we’re always looking at updating and expanding our offerings wherever we can.

For example, we launched a Popeyes restaurant at London Waterloo station this July. The American food chain is famous world-wide, but this was the first time it’s opened a restaurant in the travel space. Customers started queuing 18 hours before it opened.

A better railway

Our range of retail and food and drink offerings at our destination stations also helps us give you a better railway.

You make over 700m visits to our stations every year and retail sales surpassed £800m this year. The income made from retail is a vital part of our reinvestment back into the railway.
