Greek Street bridge replacement
We’re replacing the uniquely designed bridge that takes the Greek Street roundabout, in Stockport, over the West Coast main line.
Project timeline
Preparation work will begin in 2024 and the project will be completed in Spring 2026.
What work is taking place?
The existing structure, which is made of about 200 concrete beams, will be demolished along with the road above it, then rebuilt. The new bridge will make sure train services along the West Coast main line are safer and more reliable for years to come.
When is the work taking place?
This Christmas, we will be building a scaffold bridge to divert the important utilities that currently run under the road surface.
This work will take place between 25 – 27 December 2024. Because of the Christmas timetable, there won’t be any train services until the morning of Friday 27 December.
From March 2025, the Greek Street roundabout and part of the nearby roads nearby will close for about a year as the main work begins.
Information about diversionary routes will be shared as soon as possible. We’re working with Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council to make sure that the best diversionary routes and alternative travel options are available during the closure.
Over Easter 2025, we will be carrying out work to the railway to prepare for the major work. There will be changes to train services during the Easter bank holiday.
In August 2025, we need to close the railway in Stockport for 21 days. During this time, we will remove the old bridge and install the new one.
We’re working closely with our train operating partners and Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) to make sure that alternative transport options are clearly explained, and we will share more information as soon as possible.
There will be more railway work required in October and over Christmas 2025.
In Spring 2026, work to reinstate the road over the bridge will be completed and the Greek Street roundabout will reopen.
How will this work affect me?
We’re working closely with Stockport Council, Transport for Greater Manchester, Avanti West Coast and other industry partners to make sure residents, local businesses and visitors to the area know how they will be affected by the work.
We understand people living in and travelling through Stockport will be concerned about the road closure. We are working closely with Stockport Metropolitan Borough Council and Transport for Greater Manchester to make sure alternative travel options and diversionary routes are clearly planned and communicated. This information will be shared as soon as possible.
Rail passengers will be advised on what the work means for them with plenty of time to plan their journeys in advance.
Why is the work needed?
The original bridge, which was constructed in 1958, has reached the end of its life and needs to be replaced.
The bridge is on the West Coast main line, and sees about 400 passenger and 50 freight services passing under it each day. The replacement has to be carefully planned to make sure these services can continue to run reliably for years to come.
