Brockenhurst to Lymington Pier upgrades
We’re making improvements to the railway between Brockenhurst and Lymington so that passengers can enjoy a more reliable service into the future.
What work is taking place?
We completed our first phase of work during the half term at the end of October, when we laid three quarters of a mile’s worth of new rail either side of the viaduct in Lymington. We also carried out minor signalling repairs and cut back potentially dangerous overgrowth.
During the line closure, we examined the viaduct over Lymington River in preparation for the second phase of our work over the Christmas holidays. Over Christmas, we will be strengthening the iron columns that support it, as well as the bearers that hold the track over the river. Then we will renew the track over the viaduct to improve the reliability for passengers.
When is the work taking place?
Our next phase of work will take place over the Christmas period, and the line will be closed from Sunday 22 December 2024 to Sunday 5 January 2025.
How will this work affect me?
During this closure, buses will replace South Western Railway services between Brockenhurst and Lymington Pier. Buses will stop at all three stations on the line.
Why is the work needed?
The salty sea air makes for a more corrosive environment for the tracks and viaduct, meaning they weaken at a faster rate and become prone to faults.
Renewing both the track in the area and the viaduct over Lymington River will make them more resistant to corrosion and allow trains to keep running through the area into the future.
