Browney Curve reinforcement work

We have started a £33million project to reinforce over 1km of land at Browney Curve in County Durham.  

The land at Browney Curve, which the East Coast Main Line sits on, is an active landslip, and our teams monitor the ground to see if there’s any movement and to make sure it’s safe for trains to run.  

What we’re doing 

We’re installing reinforced concrete piles into the land around the railway. This is a permanent solution that will secure the land around the railway and provide reliable, smooth train services for our customers.  

Teams will also be carrying out work to widen the embankment, making improvements to drainage in the area and planting new trees to help the land cope with heavy rainfall.  

When is the work taking place? 

We’ve already started work at Browney Curve, to set up offices, toilet areas and welfare units for our colleagues who will be working at the site.  

Piling work is due to start in early 2024, and we aim to fully complete the project in autumn 2024.  

How will this work affect me? 

Passenger journeys will be unaffected during the project, and we will continue to carry out regular track maintenance and monitoring during and following the work.
