London Victoria and South London resignalling programme

We are delivering a major package of upgrades to modernise 1980s track and signalling on the South London lines into London Victoria.

The upgrades will improve reliability on the network, helping even more passenger and freight trains arrive at their destinations on time.

Project timeline

We are carrying out a major phased programme of signalling upgrades in south London.

Phases of signalling upgrades between Tulse Hill, Peckham Rye and Crystal Palace were completed in October 2024. Upgrades between Herne Hill, Nunhead and the Battersea are fully underway and will continue until 2026.

Work on this phase of the project is now complete, and involved:

  • Replacement of all signalling equipment in the Tulse Hill, Peckham Rye and Crystal Palace areas
  • Relocation of signalling control for the area to the state-of-the-art Three Bridges Rail Operating Centre (TBROC)
  • Upgrade of track at key rail junctions surrounding with new, more reliable equipment.

  • Improved reliability and performance of trains in South London and the wider region
  • The new, modern equipment will mean fewer faults and fewer delays for passengers travelling on lines in South London
  • Relocating the signallers for the area to the state-of-the-art Three Bridges Rail Operating Centre will help them work as a team get trains back on time when an incident occurs
  • The new equipment installed will be easier to maintain, fix and find faults when something does go wrong.

Re-control to the Three Bridges Rail Operating Centre – state-of-the-art signalling centre allows signallers to get trains back on time more quickly.


Herne Hill, Brixton, Nunhead, and the Battersea area

Upgrades between Herne Hill, Brixton, Nunhead, and the Battersea area are underway and will continue until 2026.

Overview

The phase of work involves:

  • Replacement of all signalling equipment
  • Relocation of signalling control for the Herne Hill & Nunhead areas to the state-of-the-art Three Bridges Rail Operating Centre (TBROC)
  • Replacing track and equipment at key rail junctions in South London

Benefits

  • New, modern equipment is being installed which means that railway performance improves and a better service in the area for passengers.
  • Relocating the signallers for the area to the state-of-the-art Three Bridges Rail Operating Centre will help them work as a team get trains back on time when an incident occurs.
  • The new equipment installed will be easier to maintain, fix and find faults when something does go wrong.
  • It improves services into key London stations such as London Victoria, London Blackfriars and London Waterloo
